2010 ATHENA Award

ATHENA AwardVirginia Braswell, executive officer of Habitat for Humanity of Owensboro-Daviess County is the recipient of the 2010 ATHENA Award. The ATHENA AWARD honors a person in the community who has "attained and personifies the highest level of professional excellence in their profession, has devoted time and energy to the community in a meaningful way and most especially has opened doors of opportunity for women." The award is presented jointly by Girls Incorporated and the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Braswell, who receives no pay as executive director, has headed the Habitat organization since 1993, during which time Habitat has built 90 homes for low-income persons. This year, the organization hopes to build another 5 to 7 homes.

The work of Habitat for Humanity is driven by the desire to give tangible expression to the love of God through the work of eliminating poverty housing. Habitat's mission and methods are predominantly derived from a few key theological concepts: the necessity of putting faith into action, the "economics of Jesus" and the "theology of the hammer."
